Size Matters!
The proposed towers are 425 ft. high and the blades are 260 ft. across. For comparison: 3X taller than the Statue of Liberty and over 7X taller than Tibbett's Point Lighthouse!
Facts
- This wind project if approved will create the most significant change to Cape Vincent in its history. The proposal is for approximately 100 wind turbines.
- The benefits of the project are for a minority of land owners, but the potential negative impacts will affect everyone.
- The towers are 400 ft. high and the rotors are 260 ft. across. For comparison:
- As tall or taller than the 1000 Islands Skydeck!!!
- 11 x the height of a telephone pole along RT. 12 E.!!!
- 4 to 6 x the height of a typical farm silo!!!
- Approx. 2.3 x the height of the Cape Vincent prison water tower!!!
- The rotor disc alone spans 1 sq. acre !!!
- The visual impact is the greatest concern in wind projects. Here the view has the potential to cover 100 sq. miles and cross an international border. The turbines are huge and will forever change the quiet rural agricultural and recreation atmosphere of this area. Make no mistake about it, this is an industrial scale project.
- The proposed set back for the towers is 2500 ft. from the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River. In places this puts them inside the zoned River District which was created to preserve this environmentally sensitive area for all to enjoy. At this distance, the overwhelming dimensions of the towers could be very close to your backyard and change the quality of life in the River District as well as the rest of the town.
- Two town officials and a zoning officer had to recuse themselves from voting due to a conflict of interest when it was revealed that they had secret financial dealings with the wind project company while conducting town business on the same issue!!! Some still insist they should be allowed to vote despite this conflict!!! Under these conditions the town land owners cannot possibly receive a fair hearing on a proposal of such vast importance.
- If you are a seasonal resident you pay a large portion of the town taxes, and you have had no vote in this issue, even though it could impact your quality of life here, your health, and property values for ever. The town has a history or keeping the seasonal residents in the dark on issues of importance such as the previous prison issues. Sufficient notices of town proceedings have been lacking throughout this process.
- A large industrial scale wind project has many unanswered environmental questions. Construction alone will create a major impact due to noise, traffic from the huge equipment, and the work force involved. Damage to roads is another concern.
